Living Wall

The living green walls can be also based on a simpler configuration wherein the plants can be grouped in together for making the environment look greener. Below are few of the ways on how to build the living green walls:

Identifying the right place for these living walls:

It is important to evaluate whether you would want to go in for an outdoor or an indoor living wall. Though you may be already aware on where you would want to place this structure it is also important to take other things into considerations such as what is the weight of the living wall, how much sunlight the walls would be getting through the entire day, maintenance and concerns related to disposal.

With the help of stud finder, you can ensure that the wall would be able to bear the weight. It is important to fasten your living wall firmly to at least two studs so as to prevent any issues in the future. Have a mental imagination about your living wall through all of the seasons since this change in weather would somewhere have an effect on the plants and the structure for which you should be well prepared about.

Structure:

There are a lot of companies in the market which help in providing for the prefabricated frames to be used as structures for living green walls.

Few of these models would be freestanding whether few of the others would need to be stuck on to the wall. If you prefer to make your own DIY structure at home then you can make use of recycled bottles, wood and plastic sheeting for the structures.

Measurement of the space:

With the help of a tape and pencil you can measure and mark out the dimensions on to the wall where you are intending to place the vertical garden and also make a note of them.

These would be important in terms of both whether you plan to have a prefabricated structure or whether you are planning to make your own. Also mark the spots on the wall where you have found the studs. Doing so, it would become easier when you plan to hang your living wall without any disturbance.

Gather the materials:

Let’s say if you plant to build the wooden pallet structure the firstly gather in all the materials. There would be some tools required for constructing the living wall.

For creating a wooden pallet, you would need landscaping material, wooden pallet, scissors, plastic sheeting, staples. You can get wooden pallets at your local hardware person or dumpster.

Use heavy plastic to be set inside the pallet:

With the help of scissors you can cut our strips of the plastic which would fit the contours of the inside portion of the pallet. Lay them along the wood and on the inside of the pallet. With the staple gun you can attach it firmly to each of the strip in place.

Every spot soil that it would hold should be protected properly with the help of heavy plastic sheeting. For those who do not have staple gun can make use of hammer and tacks.

However, you would need to ensure that those are sturdy tacks which would stay firmly in place since any kind of rupture in the plastic can cause leakage thus damaging the wall or dirtying the floor. Plastic sheeting can also reduce or prevent the damage caused to the wood due to regular watering.

Using landscaping material for lining the inside portion of the pallet:

This would mostly be a black colored material since it would hold water and also provide moist environment for the plants to grow. With scissors you can cut the landscape material into the strips similar to the way you did the plastic sheeting.

Seal the back of the pallet:

Since the shelves of the living wall are now sealed and lined well with the plastic and landscaping material, it is time to close the back of the pallet.

For this you would need to cut the strip of the material used for landscaping and then attach it with the help of a staple gun around the outer rim portion of the pallet.

Now that the pallet is ready you better carry out a test run before hanging it to the wall since any small mistakes in the lining can cause the dirt as well as the water to spread on to the load bearing wall wherein your vertical garden is being attached. In case if you see any leakage then there would be a need for relining the living wall with the plastic sheeting.

Installing the living wall:

Based on the size and the weight of the pallet, get some help for safely and efficiently installing the living wall.

Hold on to the back of the living wall so that it gets aligned with the dimensions that were taken initially. Ensure that it is not crooked. With the help of a screwdriver and screw anchor it to the studs placed behind.

Add soil:

Place an old sheet or a tarp to collect any dirt that would fall on the floor and take the potting soil to be added on to the shelves or the boxes of this living wall.

You may prefer to leave the sheet or the tarp in place while you are adding in the plants to the wall but if you are planning of growing the plants from the seed then it would be fine to remove the sheet.

Inserting plants:

It is up to you on what you are intending to grow. There are various types of plants you can grow such as ferns, vines, lipstick plant, succulents. Based on what you are looking for you can choose the desired plant type.

Proper circulation and lighting:

Circulation is important for purifying the space hence you can bring about improvement in circulation by placing in a fan if needed to the room where the living wall is.

Doing so would allow for more air to pass under the purifying touch of the living wall. During certain times of the year the living wall may not receive adequate lighting hence in such cases you can simply go in for a plain lamp which has a grow light that would make the plants grow well.

These are specially designed bulbs that emit a certain kind of light which would instead encourage the plant to photosynthesize.

Watering the plant:

Regularly water the plants or you can also install drip irrigation facility. Fertilize your plants since failing to do so would lead the plants to expire or wither quickly.
