The green walls often have potted plants that are fed through a system of water bowls, which means that the plants are easy to find and replace. It also means that the roots of plants are restricted in conditions that are too dry or too humid and cannot clean the air efficiently.
When evaluating the functionality of the green walls, consider the following: It is the microbial action in the root system that cleans the air;
The plants simply get the environment.
Anything that limits or isolates the root system of a living wall will also limit your ability to put nature into action.
Other walls do not use hydroponics as we do, they root their plants in growing substrates that degrade over time We use a patented growth medium that is strong enough to absorb heavy plants and has outlived time.
We build our biofilters with two layers of growth medium, allowing the roots to grow freely in the middle. This design creates optimal root loading for the airflow that is pulled through our system; the microbes in the roots do the dirty work of eating airborne pollutants, also known as biofiltration.
Keep in mind that green walls with contained roots cannot replicate this natural process.
In fact, Suntech Biofilters combines three technologies: biofiltration, phytoremediation and hydroponics in a unique system specifically designed for the treatment of indoor air quality problems.
